AbdouMaliq Simone studies urban institutions in Africa and Southeast Asia. His work examines how the inhabitants of cities navigate economic, transportation, governmental, and social systems to forge meaningful lives and collaborative partnerships. Over the past 30 years, he has held a range of faculty posts at major universities in Berlin, London, Cape Town, and Jakarta. He is the author of four books: Jakarta, Drawing the City Near (Minnesota, 2014), City Life from Jakarta to Dakar (Routledge, 2009), For the City Yet to Come (Duke, 2004), and In Whose Image? (Chicago, 1994).
