Writing about the Past

Wednesday, October 21, 2020
2:50 pm
via Zoom

A conversation with Dr. Carla Pestana, Department Chair and Professor and Joyce Appleby Endowed Chair of America in the World, UCLA, and Dr. TaraShea Nesbit, Assistant Professor of English at Miami.

How do historians and novelists approach the same topics?  What can fiction capture about the past that non-fiction cannot (and vice versa)? Whose stories do we tell about the past and why?  We'll ask these questions and more by focusing on 1620 and the founding of the Plymouth Plantation.  Pestana's The World of Plymouth Plantation (Harvard University Press, 2020) mines new sources to tell a new history of daily life in the settlement while Nesbit's novel Beheld (Bloomsbury, 2020) explores the colony ten years after its founding through the eyes of two women.
