The 1619 Project and Freedom on the Move

Join Dr. Norris and his HST206 class for a Zoom conversation with Josh Rothman. Discussion will center around the 1619 project and Rothman's project, Freedom on the Move.

The 1619 Project is an ongoing project developed by The New York Times Magazine in 2019 with the goal of re-examining the legacy of slavery in the United States and timed for the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first Africans in Virginia.

Freedom on the Move is a database of fugitives from North American slavery.

Dr. Joshua Rothman serves as a professor and department chair for the department of history. His research interests include nineteenth century America, Southern history, race and slavery, and social and cultural history.
