Ecological interactions in coffee agriculture:
Roger Wilson Lecture in Botany by Dr. Ivette Perfecto, the George Willis Park Professor of Ecology, Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan.
A reception will follow her talk in the Pearson Hall main lobby.
Dr. Perfecto is an ecologist studying biodiversity and arthropod-mediated ecosystem services in rural and urban agriculture. She is also interested more broadly on the links between small-scale sustainable agriculture, biodiversity and food sovereignty. She is co-author of four books, Breakfast of Biodiversity, Nature’s Matrix: Linking Agriculture, Conservation and Food Sovereignty, and Coffee Agroecology, and Ecological Complexity and Agroecology. She received her PhD from the University of Michigan before joining the faculty of its School for the Environment and Sustainability. She has played a lead role in numerous international collaborations, and was a Fulbright Scholar in Brazil in 2004-2005. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Diversity Award in 2011 from the Ecological Society of America
Dr. Perfecto’s visit is sponsored by the Roger E. Wilson Lecture in Botany Fund, which was named for the former ecologist in Miami's Department of Botany and established in his memory by family, friends, and colleagues.
On Thursday, October 17, Dr. Perfecto will also give the Biology Department seminar at 4:15 pm in 218 Pearson. That presentation is entitled, “Nature's Matrix: The Contributions of Agriculture to the Conservation of Biodiversity.”
