BRIGHTENing Career Thinking for Linguists and Others Who Study Language, Culture, and Communication

Wednesday, October 2, 2024
5:00 pm
Virtual

Welcome to our What’s the L? series. This is an informal series of talks showcasing works or topics in language-related disciplines.

Anna Marie Trester, a Career Linguist and Story Practitioner, is the author of Bringing Linguistics to Work and Employing Linguistics (Bloomsbury Press).

Participants in this workshop will hear career stories featuring myriad and multifaceted ways that linguists are bringing linguistics to work. They will learn an acronym (BRIGHTEN) and a metaphor (Charting the Constellations) to structure thinking about networking and finally, be given the opportunity to practice being linguists for themselves by adopting a story practice in paying attention to the language used in professional self-presentation in resumes, cover letters, job interviews, and in networking interactions. They will leave with a clearer sense of the many ways in which the skills they are cultivating now may be applied to challenges known and also to those not yet uncovered!
