DIGITAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

Launch an Innovative Public Project

Successful applicants receive a $2,000 professional expense budget and substantial technical assistance for up to a year from the Create and Innovate Department in King Library. The nature of support is based on specific project needs.

Prospective applicants should begin by consulting Carla Myers, Head of the Create and Innovate Department in King Library, to determine whether and how CID can support the proposed project. If the project can be supported, CID will provide a brief statement of possible support, which must be included in the application. This meeting should be scheduled at least six weeks prior to the application deadline, as review can take up to one month.

Applicants must be full-time permanent faculty members. Fellowship funds may be used flexibly for any professional expenses related to the project, including the appointment of student apprentices. The Humanities Center can guide faculty in the selection and awarding of scholarship support to student apprentices working on the project.

Applications should consist of a 1-2 page description of the proposed project indicating:

  • the central questions, methods, and purpose of the project
  • relevant context or background
  • the investigator’s experience or preparation for undertaking both the humanistic and technical aspects of the work.  (Deficits in the latter are expected and will not disqualify applicants.)
  • potential impact on and value for the public, scholarly audiences, or the digital humanities
  • projected needs, including student or staff assistance with data entry, technical issues, education and training, or long-term project maintenance
  • possibilities for collaboration with students, other faculty members, or technologists
  • tentative timetable of proposed activities
  • budget, if relevant
  • a brief statement of chair’s support for the fellowship if the applicant is pre-tenure

The application should also contain a letter or statement from the Create and Innovate Department indicating how the libraries can support the project. Any relevant advice or guidance from this session can be included in the application statement.

Winners may be asked to share completed projects on the Miami University Libraries’ Scholarly Commons and present work at Digital Humanities forums on campus.

Please consult the Faculty Opportunities page for application deadlines. Please direct questions about the application process to the director of the Humanities Center.  Submit applications to humanitiesgrants@miamioh.edu.
