Dr. Richard P. Meier, with the help of his colleague Justin Power, has extensively researched the history of the American Deaf community, and its language, American Sign Language. Dedicated research during the past five years has allowed them to map the hometowns of the entire schooled deaf population in the US through 1839, starting with the first five schools for the deaf beginning in 1817. In the process of this research, Meier and Power have discovered new documentary evidence of the forms of ASL signs in the 19th Century, among other discoveries.
