A Walking Tour of Sacred Sites of Oxford: Traditional and Modern

Saturday, October 22, 2022
2:00 pm
Phi Delta Theta Gate

Miami University’s Department of Comparative Religion will host Peter Williams, Professor of Comparative Religion Emeritus, and Curtis Ellison, Professor of History Emeritus, for a walking tour entitled the “Sacred Sites of Oxford: Traditional and Modern”. Taking an expansive view of the concept of the “sacred,” the tour will review the role that Oxford institutions such as the Presbyterian Church and Bagel & Deli have played in the historical formation of Miami’s students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The tour will continue on campus, covering the history of the campus seal, the Sesquicentennial Chapel, the Armstrong Student center (and its predecessors), and the Upham Arch. The tour will conclude at the Old Manse, once home to Miami’s Department of Comparative Religion and, prior to 1970, the United Campus Ministry. This tour is a kick-off for a series of events leading to the Department’s celebration of its centennial in 2027.
