Achille Mbembe is Research Professor in History and Politics at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He is the author of numerous books, including On the Postcolony, Critique of Black Reason, and Necropolitics. His recent book Out of the Dark Night offers analysis of the paradoxes of the postcolonial moment that points toward new liberatory models of community, humanity, and planetarity. He has an annual visiting appointment at the Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke University and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
