Friendship allegories proliferated in French landscape gardens of the eighteenth century, both the built and the imagined. More than sentimental or moral musings, these allegorical spaces were exotic, ambiguous, and paradoxical, curved by antagonisms underlying a fashionable, but problematic, aristocratic virtue.
