The 1619 Project and Freedom on the Move

Wednesday, September 9, 2020
2:50 pm
virtual, via Zoom

A conversation with Dr. Joshua Rothman, Professor and Chair of History, University of Alabama, Co-Director, Freedom on the Move: A Database of Fugitives from North American Slavery.

Joshua Rothman is a leading scholar of what might best be called "the new history of of slavery and capitalism" (see his essay on this subject here: https://aeon.co/ideas/how-capitalist-was-american-slavery). We'll talk about some of the ideas and issues historians of slavery are exploring now, Rothman's own works, as well as the database he co-directs.  Finally, we'll discuss the 1619 project and its implications for the understanding of American history.
