This semester, students in Elena Albarrán’s class, "The Ancient Aztec and Maya Worlds,” wrote short autobiographies in ancient Mesoamerican codex style. They first studied facsimiles of such documents in Miami Special Collections and workshopped manufacturing techniques in the adjacent Makerspace. They also learned about ancient Mesoamerican narrative and visual conventions, cosmology and story-telling, as well as the colonial processes that brought these stories to us in the present.
This special exhibition of their work will include student docents to guide visitors through the student creations and original manuscripts that inspired them. Visitors will be invited to try their hands at sixteenth-century calligraphy. Refreshments will be served, and attendees can tour the makerspace and special collections to inspire future collaborative projects of their own.
This is an open house event. Visitors are welcome to drop in any time between 1 and 3 p.m.
