Paradoxes, Tensions, and Dilemmas: The Humanities in Higher Education History

Charles Dorn is the Barry N. Wish Professor of Social Studies at Bowdoin College. A historian of education, Dorn studies the civic functions of education in the United States from elementary school to college. He is the author of For the Common Good: A New History of Higher Education in the United States, Patriotic Education in a Global Age (with Randall Curren), and American Education, Democracy, and the Second World War. His essays and articles have appeared in numerous scholarly journals and popular outlets including Inside Higher Ed and The Chronicle of Higher Education. He is the recipient of multiple awards, including a Fulbright Scholarship at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, a Landhaus Fellowship from the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, and a best essay award from the History of Education Society.
