Reading Freedom Summer Screening

Thursday, February 8, 2024
5:30 pm
Richard and Carole Cocks Art Museum Auditorium (AMU001)

The Menard Family Center for Democracy, Humanities Center, and Department of Media, Journalism & Film at Miami University host a screening of short films about civics and Oxford life at the Richard and Carole Cocks Art Museum (RCCAM) auditorium followed by a reception with hors d'oeuvres. The program will include short student documentary films made by recipients of the Center’s Summer Film Fellowship as well as Reading Freedom Summer, a 31-minute film directed by Professor Andy Rice in collaboration with students and community members as part of a Humanities Lab teaching grant.  In the film, contemporary Oxford citizens and Miami students read and reflect on letters written by the 1964 Civil Rights Movement volunteers who were training in Oxford to participate in voter registration and education initiatives in Mississippi, a campaign subsequently named Freedom Summer.
