Dr. Nicole Holliday is Acting Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of California. She is a sociophonetician whose research examines how speakers use intonation and voice quality to construct social identities and interpret the identities of others. Through her research, Dr. Holliday shows how socially prescriptive speech technologies often fail to account for variation and can disadvantage marginalized speakers. Dr. Holliday’s talk will help students connect theoretical concepts to real-world issues. Students will benefit by gaining insight into how linguistic research can address social inequality, inform technology design, and explain the role of language in public and political life.
