Dr. Peter Joseph Torres is a sociolinguist who recently joined Miami's English department as a visiting assistant professor and Heanon Wilkins fellow. His scholarship focuses on the role language plays in the sociocultural construction of health issues in written and spoken discourses. Specifically, he draws on qualitative and quantitative linguistic approaches to analyzing policies, (digital) media, and doctor-patient conversations, among others. His recent work unpacks the language of pain in the context of the American opioid crisis.
