Student Citizens is a new, summer scholarship program focused on the humanities and designed for rising seniors who attend high schools in southwest Ohio (50 mile radius of Miami's Oxford campus).
Participants will explore the meaning of citizenship through rigorous examination and discussion of classic texts. They will engage in critical thinking and writing seminars with Miami faculty, form relationships with undergraduate student mentors, and experience the power of the humanities to address the social issues that confront us today.
The program will cultivate an appreciation of the humanities as a basis for active citizenship, and will help students:
- Read and think critically
- Write and speak persuasively
- Pursue their college aspirations
Through intense exploration of writings from across the centuries, the program offers students a sense of the college experience, one-on-one mentoring by a Miami University undergraduate, and exposure to some of Miami's award-winning faculty in a supportive seminar setting.
Thanks to a grant from the Teagle Foundation, the Humanities Center, and the College of Arts and Science, this two-week residential experience on Miami’s Oxford, Ohio campus provides full tuition and all fees to a select group of rising high school seniors. Participants must demonstrate financial need and a strong desire to prepare for college success.
The Student Citizens program is not your average summer camp -- and not just because of its unique summer offerings. Beyond the two-week summer immersion into college life, participants will maintain a connection with program faculty and student mentors throughout the academic year.
Returning to Miami's Oxford campus throughout the fall, participants will benefit from ongoing academic and college preparatory support. Not only does the program offer a glimpse into college life, but it also aims to help students with their college admissions aspirations. Applicants should be prepared to return to Oxford a handful of times throughout the academic year.
Student Citizens is designed as an immersive, on campus experience. The program will run only if such an in-person experience is deemed safe by university, local, and state officials. To ensure the health and safety of all, the program will follow all CDC and local health department protocols and recommendations.
